    Thoughts on mastering medieval embroidery

    2020/08/30

Some people once told me that if I wasn't so nice, they would have to hate me because of my talent. I agree, talent is nice but talent is just one thing and it only gets you to a certain point. To understand a craft fully, one has to allow oneself to imerge into the desired field completely. But what does that really mean?

…my medieval islamic inspired embroidery project – from the medieval inspiration to an actual pattern or “an interesting journey” .2

    2017/06/29

And today we are taking another close look at my very first medieval islamic inspired embroidery project – the OvO pouch for Gloria, my dear mother-in-law. My last posting was about the problems I had to solve concerning the Arabic inscription of the extant medieval islamic embroidery before I could even think about starting with the actual embroidery. But once this initial problem was resolved, I could continue with exploring the embroidery technique which was used for the extant medieval islamic piece which inspired me.

Medieval Pelican inspiration for embroidery .1

    2015/09/11

During the last days I was searching for a new medieval pelican inspiration for my current embroidery project. Well, what shall I say – finding a new inspiration is often difficult enough but if you are looking for something special, it can appear to be even more challenging. Fully aware of this fact, I gathered my favorite books about embroidery around me, sat down and went through my books in order to find a new medieval pelican inspiration for my current 14th century hood project for my friends pelican elevation.

14th century inspired pattern for Surface Couching .1

    2015/06/15

Did you like the final drawing of the “14th century inspired pattern for surface couching” which I showed you yesterday? If the answer is yes, then I have a very good message for you. I took the time and turned the final drawing of the “14th century inspired pattern for my next surface couching embroidery project“ into a new pattern PDF for you! …and I also already uploaded it to my page! 😀

FAQ – books on medieval embroidery .1

    2015/04/20

From time to time friends ask me which books on medieval embroidery I recommend. And normally my reaction is an immediate question in return: “What are you looking for in particular…?” *lol* Extant medieval embroidery pieces provide us with a great variety of medieval embroidery techniques. And though there are not as many books on medieval embroidery available as I would like, there are still enough different books available. Therefore it’s sometimes rather difficult and time consuming to find the right book if you are looking for something in particular.

Klosterstich hands on tutorial – part 1 – how to start your Klosterstich embroidery :)

    2014/11/04

Before we get to the next steps of how to sew a perfect fitting medieval 14th century stocking based on my most recent stocking pattern tutorial, I have the very first part of my Klosterstich hands on tutorial about “how to start Klosterstich embroidery” for you. Already some time ago I promised to put together this Klosterstich hands on tutorial as an addition to my Klosterstich technique handout. It is a summery of my experience based on several Klosterstich classes which I hold throughout the last years.

Cleo again or another “cat trap” that works… ;)

    2014/05/27

Yesterday I got a great book. Well, no, I got one of the best books about medieval textiles and embroidery ever…. *very very happy dance* 😀 …and it seems that by leaving the paper and the cardboard covering on the couch, I set up another great working “cat trap”. Yeah, not only boxes work… 😉 I thought you might enjoy the photos of Cleo seizing the paper and the cardboard covering of the new book I fetched from the mail office. She looks just too cute on the photos – I really had to share them. 😀

    Useful Embroidery Books for Beginners

    2014/02/14

Now I have this lovely and nearly empty “virgin” blog in front of me and the blog postings of more than 8.5 years – about 2.300 postings “behind me”. This count includes many book reviews as you can imagine. I can really draw on plentiful resources and I am willing to do take advantage of it. 😉 During the last 14 years I bought many books about embroidery, historical costuming, medieval art, calligraphy, museum catalogues,… – just to mention a few. And since I started blogging in April 2005, I reviewed several of them.

  • positive review  Racaire's work is thoughtful, beautiful, historic and absolutely well made! There is care and pride in everything that comes out of her workshop, a craftmanship that you just don't get from mainstream markets! I have several items done by her hand and I am continually asked about them and who made them. Racaire's quality and artistic beauty shines through everytime.

Have purchased two items so far from Racaire. Both items are high quality, superb communication from Racaire with design, what was needed fabric wise and pricing. Everything was straight up and done to my exact specifications. She does beautiful work, extremely well made and is truly an artist above the rest. Purchase with confidence and rest assured that what you get will definitely bring the oohs and ahhhs.

I’ve admired Racaire’s work for months and recently had a chance to purchase one of her scarves. So delighted with my purchase! The phoenix print on the scarf is so crisp and such a lovely, unique design. The fabric is soft and just the right color to complement the design. Shipping was swift, communication was excellent, and I just really enjoy wearing something that has so much creativity poured into it. I look forward to shopping from Racaire’s Workshop again!
