  • Embroidery,  German Brick Stitch Pattern #2,  Hand-Sewing,  Medieval finishing technique for borders

Craft with Racaire – Project #1 – Step 4 – medieval finishing technique for the border :)

    2014/02/28

Ok, first we started with some embroidery and embroidered a nice “stripe” of fabric using a medieval embroidery technique – “German Brick Stitch” for our very first “Craft with Racaire” project – a small embroidered needle-roll. …and yesterday I showed you in my detailed photo tutorial how to assemble the needle-roll. Today I put together another very detailed photo tutorial for you. In this photo tutorial I will show you a nice medieval (or like some people like to call it: “period”) technique for the seam treatment at the borders.

Craft with Racaire – Project #1 – Step 3 – basic assembling of the needle-roll

    2014/02/27

Welcome to step 3.1 of my first project for “Craft with Racaire” – this time we assemble the needle-roll. In my opinion needle-rolls are a perfect little gift for everyone who uses needles in one way or another. Years ago I got my very first needle roll from my dear friend Gunnhild from Hamburg. It already shows several signs of usage because I took it with me wherever I travelled. To Germany, Finland, England, Sweden and even to the USA. This lovely small needle roll still contains all my sewing and embroidery needles and reminds me of my friend and the events we both went to…

14th century French Pouch .1 – first embroidery

    2014/02/26

Recently I was speaking about a pouch project with a customer who wanted to complete his 14th century kit with an embroidered pouch made by me. Well, while I was showing him pictures concerning period solutions for the pouch lacing he just fell in love with an extant 14th century French pouch I showed him… *lol* That was the end of the German Brick Stitch pouch project he had on mind before and the start for something new – my new 14th century French pouch commission – and best of all, I have to use a technique I have known for years now and already thought about to try but…

    Sneak Peak – Craft with Racaire – Needle-roll #1

    2014/02/26

Great news! I just finished my Craft with Racaire – Project #1 – needle-roll #1. …and I took more than plenty pictures for some nice tutorials for you. Pictures like the ones of how I assembled the needle-roll and how I made this small tassels. They are just waiting for me to turn them into some nice tutorials for you. 🙂 My project #2 is also already finished – my gaming pouch for my 14th century backgammon game box – I just need to take some pictures of the finished pouch for you as soon as I find some time for it.

    Craft with Racaire – Needle-roll #1 & German Brick Stitch Pattern #2

    2014/02/22

Embroidery comes rather naturally to me but I learned during my last 9 years of blogging, holding classes at SCA events and explaining techniques to friends that unfortunately not everyone is also as fortunate. In the past this was just one more reason for me to make tutorials and to share my knowledge and my technique “insights” on my blog. As long as I can handle a camera, a tablet and a computer I won’t stop doing it, I promise. Nevertheless, as some people could tell you who already met me in real life, I just love “talking” about my craft & hobby. Posting on my blog is just another…

    Craft with Racaire – Needle-roll #1

    2014/02/19

Before I “restarted” my new blog, I told a friend of mine that I have many possible projects I could start with for my new section “Craft with Racaire”. I told her that I could start with a German Brick Stitch needle-roll, a Klosterstich needle-book, a 12th century fillet, a Reliquary box with bead embroidery based on a rather rare 13th century Pearl Ciborium or based on a period extant piece, another pull-over dress/underdress with revisiting my last recent pattern, a tight fitted bliaut, a linen veil with a period bird pattern, the “We have Dragons” project, a pouch, a hood with daggings,… – just to name a few possibilities.…

Medieval Embroidery – German Brick Stitch Pattern #1

    2014/02/17

After all the hours which I spent working at German Brick Stitch chart(s) today and yesterday, I am happy to say that I just finished the German Brick Stitch Pattern #2 for my first “Craft with Racaire” project. But this is Pattern #2 and I haven’t re-uploaded Pattern #1 yet – therefore I decided to start with my German Brick Stitch Pattern #1. I am quite sure some of you will remember the pattern and/or my handout with the pattern chart, which you can see at the picture on the left side. I uploaded it to my blog and a download link for it can be found at the new…

Medieval Embroidery – German Brick Stitch – helpful sources & embroidery for needle-roll #1

    2014/02/16

As you already might have noticed, I really love medieval embroidery. …and I decided that after all this postings it is finally time for some embroidery done by me. German Brick Stitch seemed like a good technique to start with. Especially because this stitch looks very pretty on needle-rolls & pouches. As I already wrote in my posting “Embroidered patches for Racaires 12th century wedding dress project” I want to put together a small gift package. (look out for the PPS at the bottom of the posting about my wedding dress project) For this “thank you gift package” I will embroider at least one gift. I consider needle-rolls and needle-books to…

  • positive review  Racaire made and appliqué and embroidered Rose hood for me as a commissioned present. It is stunning, the skill and attention to detail are superb. It is one of the most beautiful things I own. Wool with silk and gold work.

I received my most recent order today and I just had to come on here to say that getting an order from this shop is second to none - it’s like Christmas every time. Racaire puts a ton of extra care into every order - each item is wrapped like a present, carefully folded, tied with ribbon, and includes care instructions. Getting to unwrap each item is such a joy. Beyond that, the work is spectacular, looks good, and wears well. You can wash and rewash and the prints look as good or better than they did on day one. I would give Racaire 10/10 stars every time.

  • positive review  Racaire's work is thoughtful, beautiful, historic and absolutely well made! There is care and pride in everything that comes out of her workshop, a craftmanship that you just don't get from mainstream markets! I have several items done by her hand and I am continually asked about them and who made them. Racaire's quality and artistic beauty shines through everytime.
