Another needle book with Klosterstich embroidery .4

    2014/09/10

…and besides all the work at the house, I managed to finish another needle book with Klosterstich embroidery for my Travel & Largesse Fund. 🙂 Already for several days now I am busy working at my very first own sewing & crafting room as well as the adjacent rooms. Though it seems to take forever, it somehow pleases me to see the progress. It feels like the house is becoming more and more my/our home. 🙂

Yes, I know, I already wanted to start working at my Klosterstich hands-on photo tutorial but I have to admit that I just finished another small needle book with Klosterstich embroidery instead. 😀 While I was getting the materials for my hands-on photo tutorial together, I realized that I still have two small patches with 14th century inspired Klosterstich embroidery which I haven’t turned into needle books yet…

Well, that’s great because I have a cute combination of both for you today. 😀 Again I turned one of the recently embroidered Klosterstich patches into a small needle book for my Travel & Largesse Fund. I think this needle book is even more beautiful that the needle book which I finished yesterday. …but well, I am biased, therefore decide yourself. 😉 And here the picture of my new needle book with the 14th century Klosterstich rose – enjoy! 😀

…and after all the small patches for my new needle books showing flowers done in Klosterstich technique, I again have a 14th century inspired fleur-de-lis Klosterstich embroidery for you. With all this small embroidered patches lying before me, I really think that I should go on and transform them into some nice needle books now. They will be a beautiful addition for my “Travel & Largesse Fund”. My pile of U.F.O.s* is already big enough and doesn’t need any further addition. Therefore – where are my leftover wool fabrics, threads and needles?! *lol* 😉 But first things first – here a picture of my most recent fleur-de-lis in Klosterstich embroidery for you and some additional progress pictures – enjoy! 😀

    2014/07/28

The Klosterstich embroidery technique is one of my favorite embroidery techniques. As some of you might remember, I always tremendously enjoy working at projects which involve this technique. Therefore it’s no wonder that I enjoyed working at my recent needle books with Klosterstich embroidery so much that I decided to embroider more small patches  and to sew more needle books. Furthermore I also have the feeling that my “Travel & Largesse Fund” is still much too empty for my personal taste. I definitely need to make more small gifts. 🙂 This is why I again started working at small patches with Klosterstich embroidery and I already have one more Klosterstich embroidery for needle books…

My recent 4day trip to Barcelona as well as the postings about my favorite Barcelona photos were a nice possibility to take a short break from my ongoing embroidery projects. This is one of my favorite ways to restore my energy and inspiration for new projects and postings. But now it is definitely time to get back to my embroidery projects and my embroidery related postings with renewed power. About 2 years ago, during my very first stay in the states, I gave away some hand embroidered needle books as gifts to interesting people which I met on my journey. I was told that this needle books were highly appreciated and became treasured and loved items of their owners. Well, what shall I say, this kind of message is always a great balm for the soul of an artisan. 🙂

Instagram post 2192605114779251533_5455272668 Ok, as I promised- here my Austrian Krautsalad recipe in step by step pics:
FIRST - chop/slice your cabbage very finely, salt it, work the salt into the cabbage, put a plate on top, press it down, cover it up and let it rest over night in the refrigerator.
SECOND - press out as much of the cabbage juice and salt as possible and put aside, when finished discard the juice, clean the bowl/pot and put the cabbage back.
THIRD - Mix about 1 cup of vinegar with 1-2 cup of water, bring to boil, mix in about 3 tablespoons of caraway seeds, fresh ground nutmeg & pepper, bayleaves, a little bit of sea salt and 2 and 1/2 Tablespoons of sugar (we used 2 tbsp cane sugar and 1/2 tablespoon demerara cane sugar) - carefully season to taste as different sugars can impact the sweetness differently! Depending on how salty the kraut still is after pressing it out, you want to adjust the sweetness in the pickling liquid accordingly - the more salty the kraut is, the sweeter you want it. Bring the mix to a boil.
FOURTH - pour the mixture over the cabbage and mix well, add about a half to 1 cup of vegetable oil and mix again. Taste and if it's to your liking, fill it into a big jar and store it in the refrigerator.
My Krautsalad has quite some acidity and a big jar like this normally holds up for at least 1 month or longer without any problems - that is, if it ever survives for that long!
We normally use the big jars of jalapenos after my hubby empties them - they have just the right size for 2 small kraut heads.
However, we already had to test the first batch with some pork chops and roasted cilantro-lemon pepper potatoes... I definitely have to get some sausages and buns as this Krautsalad tastes amazingly on hot dogs...

Instagram post 2192475361828979561_5455272668 I am so excited! All the sewing paid off! I have several new big blue linen coifs as well as tight fitted blue and black linen coifs! Now I just have to find out how I want to print them. Trimarian triskeles? My new 12th century stamp? Crosses? Roses? White or yellow or even gold? There are so many lovely possibilities! ...and if you don't like printed coifs - I'll make sure to leave some coifs unprinted!

Instagram post 2191923357608206951_5455272668 New Kraut is coming from the fields into the stores which means that it's time for one of my husbands and my personal favorites: Austrian Krautsalat!

Yeah, it's not Sauerkraut it's Krautsalad! There is a slight difference - Sauerkraut is fermented and Krautsalad is a rather quick pickle. Nevertheless it starts very similar - kraut is chopped up as finely as possible and pretty well salted. Then you knead the sea salt into the kraut, cover it up and let it rest for some time so the salt can pull moisture out of the kraut and soften it up. I like to leave it in over night and we will continue with the next step tomorrow where my sweethearts big hands will come in very handy... 🤗😁😍😁🤗 #racaire #ConradvomSchwarzwald #cooking #cookingfromscratch #salad #salat #pickling #pickles #fastpickles #fastpickle #kraut #seasalt #salt #krautsalat #krautsalad #austrian #austrianfood #austriancooking #austrianclassics #austriancuisine #austrianinamerica #germancooking #german #germanfood #notsauerkraut #yummy #seasonal #seasonalfood #seasonalproduce
Instagram post 2191117820754896385_5455272668 After making all those black and white linen coifs recently, I decided to add some more color to my stash by making some coifs out of this lovely blue linen! Instagram post 2190350351421159493_5455272668 This photo shows you the very first two roundels and the very first story on my 14th century based and inspired Weiberlisten (tricks of the ladies/Malterer) wallhanging!
It shows the Biblical story of Samson and Delilah. First you can see how Samson defeats a lion with his bare hands and then is defeated himself, when Delilah takes his strength away by cutting his hair while he sleeps.
This story as well as all the other stories shown at the Weinerlisten/tricks of the ladies tapestry were very popular during the middle ages. They all show how women can have power over men and/or trick them. It is unclear if this tapestry was made in order to serve as a warning to men about the tricks of the ladies or if it was demonstrating the increasing power and self-confidence of women in this century.
💛🦁😍🦁💛 It took me about 4 years to complete this wallhanging which was completely embroidered by hand in the medieval 14th century Klosterstich (cloister stitch) technique. The wallhanging was executed with the wonderful plant died threads from Renaissance Dyeing!
